How we rankMaui diving splits between two coasts. Lahaina shops on the west side look across the channel to Lanai and its lava-tube Cathedrals. Kihei and Wailea shops on the south side are close to Turtle Town and to Kihei Boat Ramp, one of the main departure points for Molokini Crater. Below are 10 dive shops in Maui with a public listing and their own website, ranked by public review scores. Four have Lahaina addresses and five are in Kihei or Wailea. Advanced drift dive along a sheer volcanic wall that drops about 350 ft, with whitetip and gray reef sharks, eagle rays and a chance of mantas or other pelagics.

April to October usually has the calmest seas, and December to March is the heart of humpback whale season (both approximate). NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says whales are in Hawaiian waters from about November through May, with the peak from January through March. On winter dives you may hear whale song underwater.
Water temperature is about 73 to 81°F / 23 to 27°C (approximate). As a general guideline, many divers use a 3mm full wetsuit here. Ask the shop what it provides, and treat this as typical conditions, not a forecast for one day.
Wind tends to pick up mid-morning, so early boat departures are common, according to the molokinicrater.com guide to the Back Wall.
For a standard scuba dive, yes. You do not need a card for a Discover Scuba / try dive, which is a supervised introduction and not a certification. It depends on the site. The Back Wall is not a beginner dive. The molokinicrater.com guide describes it as a drift dive along a sheer wall for experienced, certified divers only, and not for a first dive. The same guide says some boats only dive inside the crater, most skip the back side in bad weather, and most dive boats leave from Kihei Boat Ramp or Maalaea Harbor. Ask the shop which Molokini site it plans and what level it suits.
Yes. Eight of the 10 shops on this list mention shore dives on their websites. Turtle Town (Makena Landing / Five Caves) is a shallow South Maui shore dive described as beginner-friendly. Mala Wharf is an easy Lahaina-side shore dive around a collapsed pier. The St. Anthony wreck off Wailea sits at about 65 ft and can be reached from shore or by kayak. The National Park Service lists the Haleakala summit at 10,023 ft, and Divers Alert Network (DAN) says any ascent to altitude after diving, even by car, increases decompression stress. DAN's minimum surface intervals before flying are 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and 18 hours after multiple dives in a day or multiple days of diving. Plan the summit before your dives or after that wait, and follow your training and your shop's advice.
