Roatan Diving: West End, West Bay and Best Time to Go

October 13, 2026 · Xavier Pladevall · Destinations

Plan Roatan diving: West End vs West Bay, water temps by month, Mary's Place, El Aguila, Cara a Cara shark dive, and when to go for calm seas.

Roatan diving is Caribbean wall diving with short boat rides, warm water and enough site variety to fill a week without repeating the same profile. The island sits on Honduras's Bay Islands chain along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, so most days you choose between easy coral slopes, dramatic walls, swim-throughs, a famous wreck and a guided shark dive.

This guide covers how West End and West Bay differ as bases, what the water actually feels like by month, which sites suit which certification level, and when to book if you care about calm seas or clearer days. I checked the sources linked below in mid-October 2026. Conditions shift year to year, so treat temperatures and seasons as typical ranges, not guarantees.

West End vs West Bay

You do not have to pick forever, but most first trips base in one area for the week.

West End

West End is the diving hub. Shops, restaurants and walkable docks cluster in a small area, so you can book two-tank mornings, rinse gear and walk to dinner without needing a car every day. Local walls and reefs sit close, and boats can still reach Sandy Bay wrecks or pivot when wind shifts.

Who it suits: Divers whose main goal is logging quality dives. Mixed groups that want shops within walking distance.

West Bay

West Bay is more resort and beach oriented. The sand and snorkeling are the draw; diving is easy to add if your hotel partners with a shop or arranges pickups. It works well if one person in the group wants beach days while the other dives.

Who it suits: Couples and families who want a beach vacation with diving on the side. Less ideal if you want to hop between independent shops on foot.

Quick pick

  • Diving is the point of the trip? Base in West End.
  • Want a resort beach and are fine with transfers? Base in West Bay.
  • Hunting south-side sites like Mary's Place on windy weeks? Ask shops which marina they leave from and how often they run south when the north is rough. Some operators only reach Mary's Place on "southside days" when winds allow (Sun Divers).

Best time to dive Roatan

There is no single closed month. There is a best window for what you care about.

Water temperature (verified averages)

Long-term monthly averages at Roatan run from about 26.3°C (79.3°F) in February to 29.6°C (85.3°F) in September (seatemperature.org). That is warm Caribbean water year-round. A 3mm shorty or rash guard covers many summer profiles; bring a full 3mm if you chill easily or plan deeper wrecks.

Calm seas and visibility

Several independent guides describe February through June as the most reliable stretch for calmer seas and stronger visibility, with more rain and "northers" more common from about October through January (OhMyDive). Island House's local guide frames March through August as the drier, clearer stretch (Island House).

PickADive's climatology across 18 Roatan sites (multi-year measured history, not a forecast) finds August and September historically have the highest share of days in their "favorable" band, with October also strong, while May scores lowest in that sample (PickADive). Treat that as historical sea-state pattern, not a promise of perfect viz every August day.

Hurricane season and wetter months

Atlantic hurricane season runs roughly June 1 to November 30. Direct hits on Roatan are uncommon relative to the wider Caribbean, but tropical weather can still cancel boats or push shops to the lee side. Book operators that can switch coasts instead of locking you into one site list.

Key dive sites and who they suit

West End Wall

Roatan's signature west-side wall profile. The reef starts relatively shallow, then drops into blue, so you can run conservative multilevel plans or deeper Advanced profiles depending on gas and experience (OhMyDive). Good first wall day for confident Open Water divers with a guide.

Mary's Place

The island's most famous site, on the southeast / Brick Bay area near Barefoot Cay. A plateau starts around 10 m / 30 ft; fissures and walls drop toward about 40 m / 120 ft, with swim-throughs, sponges and black coral (Sun Divers; Island House).

Sun Divers treats it as an advanced dive (depth plus buoyancy in crevices) and asks for Advanced Open Water or a completed Deep Adventure dive, plus a checkout dive first (Sun Divers). South-side access also depends on wind; many west-side boats only go on favorable "southside days."

El Aguila wreck

A 230-foot freighter intentionally sunk near Sandy Bay in 1997 by Anthony's Key Resort as an artificial reef. It now lies in several pieces at around 110 ft / 33 m after Hurricane Mitch damage (Anthony's Key Resort; Splash Inn). Expect grouper, jacks and classic wreck structure next to the wall. Plan for Advanced-level depth comfort.

Cara a Cara (shark dive)

A guided encounter with Caribbean reef sharks on a south-side plateau around 21 m / 70 ft (Reefwander; Island House). Protocols are shop-controlled; confirm briefing rules, cert requirements and whether the dive runs on your dates.

Other names you will hear

Blue Channel and Spooky Channel show up often for coral channels, canyons and intermediate-to-advanced profiles (OhMyDive; Island House). Ask your shop which of these fit your logbook and the week's wind.

Practical planning tips

Airport: Fly into Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) near Coxen Hole. Transfers to West End or West Bay are commonly about 25 to 40 minutes by taxi or shuttle depending on traffic (OhMyDive).

Wetsuit: 3mm shorty or rash guard for peak summer for many people; full 3mm if you run cold or do deeper wrecks. Water is warm, but thermoclines and long bottom times still sneak up on some divers.

Wind flexibility: Book a shop that can switch between west walls, Sandy Bay and (when possible) south-side sites instead of promising Mary's Place every day.

Certification: Open Water covers many west-side reefs and walls with a guide. Bring Advanced (or plan Deep on site) if Mary's Place, El Aguila or similar depths are must-dos.

How to book: Contact independent local dive shops directly. Ask about group size, which sites they run in your wind window, nitrox, marine park fees and cancellation rules. Recent reviews on the shop's own site beat a vague marketplace listing.

Bay Islands context: Roatan is the infrastructure-heavy island for diving volume. Utila is often compared for a cheaper, backpacker-leaning vibe; a dedicated Roatan vs Utila comparison is planned separately. FAQ-style bottom line

Roatan works for a first Caribbean wall week and for Advanced divers chasing wrecks and crevices. Base in West End if diving is the priority; base in West Bay if the beach is. Aim for late winter through early summer if you want the calmest consensus window, and keep hurricane-season flexibility if you travel from June through November. Check water temps on seatemperature.org and confirm site access with your shop the week you arrive.

Questions

When is the best time to dive Roatan?
Roatan is diveable year-round. Many operators and guides point to roughly February through June for calmer seas and stronger visibility. PickADive's multi-year site climatology finds August and September historically have the highest share of favorable sea days. Caribbean hurricane season runs roughly June through November, so build flexible dates if you travel then.
Should I stay in West End or West Bay for diving?
Stay in West End if diving is the main reason for the trip: most shops cluster there and short boat rides are easy on foot. Stay in West Bay if you want a resort beach base and are fine transferring to boats or booking a shop that picks you up. Many divers split time or base in West End and day-trip to West Bay beaches.
What water temperature should I expect in Roatan?
Long-term averages from seatemperature.org run from about 26.3°C (79.3°F) in February to 29.6°C (85.3°F) in September. Most divers are comfortable in a 3mm shorty or a rash guard in summer; a full 3mm is a safer pick if you run cold or plan deeper wreck profiles.
Do I need Advanced Open Water for Mary's Place and El Aguila?
Often yes in practice. Sun Divers treats Mary's Place as an advanced site (depth and swim-throughs) and asks for Advanced Open Water or a completed Deep Adventure dive, plus a checkout dive. El Aguila sits around 33 m / 110 ft near Sandy Bay, so Advanced-level depth comfort and gas planning matter. Ask your shop before you book.
Is Roatan good for beginner divers?
Yes. Many west-side reef and wall entries are calm, boat rides are short, and shops run Open Water courses and fun dives for newly certified divers. Save deeper wrecks, tight crevices and shark dives for when you and your guide agree you are ready.
What are the must-do dive sites in Roatan?
Mary's Place (south-side crevices and walls), El Aguila wreck near Sandy Bay, West End Wall for classic multilevel wall diving, and Cara a Cara for a guided Caribbean reef shark dive are the names you will hear most. Site access still depends on wind and which side of the island is sheltered that day.
